Synopsis
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes typically highlights social injustices and works to address them. Holmes is presented as bringing a fresh, more equitable view of justice. The pieces were favorably appreciated, which increased The Strand Magazine's subscription numbers and allowed Doyle to seek more money for his subsequent collection of stories. Irene Adler appears in the first story, "A Scandal in Bohemia," even though Doyle only gave her a little role in this one tale. She frequently appears in contemporary Sherlock Holmes adaptations as the love interest for Holmes. Doyle chose "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" as his all-time favorite Sherlock Holmes tale, and four of the collection's twelve tales were featured in his list of the twelve best Sherlock Holmes tales.
