This book sets before the reader a compilation of printed and manuscript information on the healing practices of the New Zealand Maori.
It does not claim to be complete, indeed this is impossible, and probably always was, given the secrecy surrounding the rituals, practices and healing methods of individual iwi and tribes. The noted ethnologist Elsdon Best acknowledged that even in his day, when discussion could be held with persons of great knowledge, only a mere fraction of understanding could be obtained by a non-Maori researcher of the philosophies of the learned tohunga of pre-Euroman times. Therefore, the first part of the book entitled "Maori Healing and Health Topics'' incomplete as it must be, is particularly valuable since it draws together all the available information on spiritual healing, then directs the reader to the relevant herbs.

In this remarkable sequel to his ground-breaking Tohunga: Hohepa Kereopa (2003), historian Dr Paul Moon again travels deep into Tuhoe territory – and deep into its past – to uncover a wealth of material. This time he reveals his discussions with Hohepa Kereopa on traditional plants, cultivation, gardening, foods, medicines, and other aspects of the natural Maori world. This book is indispensable for anyone with an interest in customary Maori life, and provides a unique perspective on the work of a great tohunga at the height of his powers.
Beautifully written, with vivid, memorable descriptions of encounters with Kereopa and his world, Moon has crafted a book that will serve as a taonga for generations to come.

This is not an abstract, academic text which talks about complicated models of Maori health. Nor is it an exposition of models of Maori health based on someone's ideas of traditional Maori values or structures.
This is a diagnostic and habilitative text. It looks at the present state of maori health and Maori health provision, and makes a case for change so that Maori health is improved.
