News and what's new
The best of upcoming events, our recommendations, and news about books
Monthly Bookclub
Our regular bookclub meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm and we have just added a second meeting on the second Thursday of each month for coffee and cake at 10 am, new members are always welcome particularly to the morning group.
For August we are reading
Burnt Shadows
, a first novel by a talented new author
Kamila Shamsie
set in Japan and the United States via India and Pakistan.
INSPIRATION FOR WHAT TO READ
We don't make recommendations based on books solely reviewed in Wellington or Auckland - we make
personal
recommendations based on what we have read and chosen to stock. Often there is hot competition between our staff to get to read a particular book next. Between us all we read a wide range and if you check out
Our Favourites
– you will see it lists some of the great books we have been enjoying, some new and some not.
There is a fine line between marketing and informing customers and it is with some sadness that we have seen a cynical move on the part of the chains to employ a
name
to read their books for them and pass off their recommendation as anything other than a means to sell volumes of books discounted by the publisher. One chain has taken to pretending that they are
local
and and we are flattered that they also wish to be known as a
large independent!
