Bone Carving order quantity

NZ$ 30.00 each
Paperback
Author: Stephen Myhre
Published by: Raupo Pub. NZ (ex-Reed)
In Stock: 2
Bone carving is as old as civilisation itself. Even some of the oldest bone artifacts have decorative features that are clearly not necessary for their functional nature, showing that there have been complex cultural aspects to the carving of bone since earliest times. The first settlers of Aotearoa brought with them the skills of bone carving, both for items of personal adornment and for the manufacture of tools such as fish-hooks. These skills have been passed on, incorporating various cultural adaptations, to the present day. In Bone Carving, Stephen Myhre has drawn with great sensitivity on techniques and styles of carving from a wide range of Pacific cultures, but particularly Maori. The result is a superb practical handbook for anyone embarking upon this rapidly growing craft. The book provides what the author calls a 'skillbase' - a reliable set of practices and attitudes that can successfully produce bone carvings of great ... more

Rauru : Tene Waitere, Maori Carving, Colonial History order quantity

Hardback
Author: Nicholas Thomas (ed) (photography Mark Adams; interviews James Schuster & Lyonel Grant)
Published by: Otago University Press

Tene Waitere of Ngati Tarawhai (1854-1931) was the most innovative Maori carver of his time; his works reached global audiences decades before the globalisation of culture became a fashionable topic.
Rauru is the highlight of a famous anthropological museum in Germany. Hinemihi, the carved house featured in one section of this book, sheltered survivors of the Tarawera eruption in 1886 before being removed to the park of an English country house. His carved Ta Moko panel is one of Te Papa the Museum of New Zealand's icons. Three out of four historic Maori meeting-houses located outside New Zealand were carved or partly carved by Waitere. The travels of his work tell us something about the interplay between empire and art, about what is made of history now. The combined perspectives of his descendants, of a leading contemporary carver, of a master photographer and a distinguished anthropologist and historian of Pacific art ... more

Ta Moko : The art of Maori Tattoo order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 40.00 each
Paperback
Author: D.R. Simmons
Published by: Raupo (Penguin)
In Stock: 1
Ta Moko is an outstanding work of Maori scholarship.
The art of Maori tattoo has always been regarded with fascination, and this was one of the first comprehensive books on the subject.
The author,a former ethnologist with the Auckland Museum, provides an examination of Maori moko in all its aspects - its historical develpment, tribal variations, design principles and social significance.
In this illustrated study of male and female moko, the author draws on the records, journals and sketches of early European observers in New Zealand - explorers such as Cook, de Surville and du Fresne and later traders and missionaries. He relies, too, on visual sources, including the work of artists such as Earle, Angas, Robley, Lindauer and Goldie, to document the increasing standardisation, and eventual decline and disappearance of male moko in the nineteenth century.

A companion volume to Painted Histories.

Covering the Ngati Tarawhai carvers' distinctive style from pre-European times to the present day, this account presents a vivid analysis of Maori woodcarving. As the most prolific school of their kind in New Zealand, the Ngati Tarawhai have played a critical role in the development and survival of this particular art form. Spanning from the end of the New Zealand wars to the beginning of "tourist art," this chronicle explores their creations, outlining the relationships between the carvers and their Maori patrons.
Biographies of Ngati Tarawhai artists and a list of all known carvings are also included.
